Kolkata Noir is a crime fiction novel that centers around Inspectress Madhurima Mitra of Kolkata Police and British photographer Becker who are connected by a city and its crimes. Their stories are told in three different parts – Calcutta in 1999, Kolkata in 2019 and Killkata in 2039.
I find the way the story was told is really interesting and unique. We get to see the transformation of this city over the years. It was atmospheric and the descriptions on the city, culture and people are amazing, transporting me to this place. I enjoyed the story in Calcutta 1999 the most as it was kind of like an inverted crime story, but the setting in Killkata 2039 was the most interesting one, where the city is now half submerged due to rising sea levels.
Although I wish that there is a bit more depth in the characters, overall, this was a good quick crime novel. I liked that it was set in a different country with different culture. I enjoyed the author’s writing and looking forward to read more of his books!
